Say it with a Onesie

So here is the truth.

Taking care of a newborn is some repetitious work.

There are lots of things that you WANT to be doing, but are physically, mentally or emotionally incapable of doing for a while.

Well guess what?

It’s totally ok.

You don’t need to prove to the world that you are a super mom.

Just to your baby.

And the best way to prove that is lots of snuggles, feeding, and binge watching a funny show on Netflix so you can laugh and feel somewhat normal while that sweet baby sniffs and snuggs all up in your arms.

If there are other children in the picture, this may have to be after they are finally in bed and it’s just you and the new night owl chilling together.

Whatever your routine, know that you don’t need to apologize for letting go of the little things and letting someone else step in and help you out while you kick back and recover.

Ok.

I got a little carried away there. With my little dude number 2, life was very nutso. We closed on our first home purchase the week before he was born. It was a fixer upper. Basically my dream house. I love diy projects and being involved in them. But guess what? I just had a baby and found myself sitting amongst boxes in a half-packed up house with two little guys while everyone else worked on my new place without me. I was bummed, to say the least, that I was helplessly sitting around doing mundane mom stuff every day at our old place, rather than being part of the excitement, progress and decision making at the new home.

So you know what I did?

I watched Gilmore Girls.

Everyone always told me how funny it was, so I gave it a shot. Sure, it isn’t for everyone, but I think people who have struggles and victories and have weird people in their lives and witness a little bit of crazy drama here and there can relate to Lorelai and Rory, and it did cheer me up and distracted me from my bummer summer sitch.

So that is what inspired this onesie, and I feel like a lot of other little mothers can possibly relate.

Bikes & Boys

I was at the Hob Lob yesterday, making my usual yarn rounds
And happened upon some great super soft fleece bicycle fabric
Along with a matching chevron
(Husband is a bicycle enthusiast)
So I decided that littlest dude needed a new baby blanket.
Then eldest dude insisted upon needing pajama pants.
This is what came of it!
Next time I will be using a pants pattern, however!
(And perhaps next time I won’t have to stand with a sleeping baby
in the Ergo-baby-carrier whilst using the sewing machine!)

And since my sewing machine was already out,
I upcycled a weird halloween raven shirt I had thrifted for a different project I never did
And made that into a fun little beanie.

So needless to say,
My house has fallen apart in the meantime!
But this was fun, so it all evens out.

Warmth

I’m pretty sure this winter has been rough on everyone, everywhere.
I have tried not to complain about it because there really isn’t anything we can do but wait it out!
Every time it snows, I’m just glad that the ugly dirty salty snow/ice gets covered back up so the ground is pretty again.
In the meantime, I will continue to wear cozy scarves and try to stay warm.
This one came as a Christmas gift from my Mother-In-Law who found it when she was working in Afghanistan last summer.
I love everything about it, and it is certainly my warmest.

Mad Men Garb, Anyone? First Lady?

I finally got around to listing some great vintage pieces on my Etsy that I’ve been hanging on to for a long time.
And after getting sidetracked like ten million times,
And looking at all the amazing 1950’s style party frocks,

(And wishing I could find a place online to watch the most recent season of Mad Men before I start my TVFREE2013)

I’ve decided that if MY husband was the President of the US of A,
I would completely deck myself out in Etsy finds and wear only vintage party dresses.
I hope that my husband never becomes the President though,
And I’m really sure that will never happen so I won’t worry about that.

Taking the pictures for the listing is half the fun!

So what do you think – are these dresses Joan, Betty, or Peggy?

Down, Down, Baby!

Husband decided he wanted a down pullover jacket for camping.
He went and bought some nylon fabric.
We appointed an old down comforter of ours to participate.
Then…
We attempted to make it.

DONE!

Can you tell this used to be a dress shirt for a man?

Well, maybe…. but still!

What did I do, you ask?

Cut the sleeves off,
cut the collar off,
took the sides in,
added some mild darts,
elastic on the shoulders and in center of back,
created sleeve half-ruffles out of the original sleeves I removed,
added a patch of lace on the right front (in case the gun you’re shooting kicks back) 😛
and made a fluffle (fluffy ruffle) out of tulle for the upper half of the placket.

Modeling pose…
Unassuming pose…

Fluffle details…

Back o’ shirt… Ponderous pose…

Lace action…

And there it is!
I am happy with it. 🙂
What should I sew next?

Sew Ladylike

Today I am fixing up an old shirt of Seth’s to be girlish and cute…
I’m not sure whether I will be turning it into a dress or having it remain shirt.
We will see.
I’m not skilled at this sort of thing, so it could be interesting!
Pictures will be up when I complete it!
